Sparky Town

Despite living only a jump and a skip away from Sparky Town, I hadn’t had the pleasure of visiting the restaurant.

I had heard that it had good, down-to-earth food and that it was an extension of the “gay-bourhood”, which is basically the Hawley-Green area. So when some friends asked if I wanted to join them, I gladly agreed, and we headed there for an early dinner on a Tuesday afternoon.

We got a bit lost on the way there, as it is inconspicuously located on the corners of Burnet-Catherine, and we parked across the street as they had no parking lot, and hurried inside to avoid the cold.

Empire Sub Shop

The wife and I dropped in to this relatively new restaurant on Valentine’s Day.  It was later in the afternoon, after the lunch rush.  The parking lot was relatively clear of snow, easy to find a spot.  There was a couple eating lunch, and another two tables with single diners.  Empire is located in the former Burger King in downtown Liverpool.  The inside is somewhat remodeled, but it’s pretty easy to tell what the place used to be.

The menu is extensive, and is displayed on an easy-to-read panel over the counter.  Whole subs, half subs and wraps are all listed there.  According to their web site (www.empiresubshop.com) they also offer daily soups.  Prices seemed to be pretty good, but I wanted to reserve judgement until after the meal.

Doug’s Fish Fry (Skaneateles)

Wall Street’s RecommendationBuy

The Executive Summary:  What has become nothing short of an institution in the town of Skaneateles is, in my opinion, an above average seafood shack and worth visiting should you be in the area.  I can’t bring myself to give this the Strong Buy many might look for in this review…perhaps this is because I grew up on John’s Atlantic Seafood fried haddock (formerly in Mattydale Plaza, now on 31 in Baldwinsville) and have a childhood predisposition to that recipe.  However, the fact remains that the breading lacks the texture and flavour that I find more pleasing to the palate that John’s provides.  Couple that with John’s stellar sides and Doug’s moves firmly into second place.  But this is not a review of John’s so…

The Full Report:  Took the wife and kids out for the weekend to enjoy an autumn walk thru the Skaneateles shopping district and decided to try “the original” Doug’s as I’d been told that the former hub in Clay with the same namesake paled in comparison to the one on the Lake.  It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon and while the streets were bustling, there was at least 50% of the seats in the place empty.  Perhaps this isn’t the prime time for the joint…

Cole’s Burger Co – lunch

After several fits and starts, Cole’s Burger Company is now open on Rt 57 in Liverpool. A very important part of this review is the location – it’s in the building that a lot of us still think of as “Tommy’s.” Sure, it’s hosted more than it’s fair share of failed eateries in the last few years; off the top of my head, I can think of Garcia’s Mexican and most recently Lou-Lou’s. But I don’t really think there’s a jinx on the location. It’s not the building or the lot that causes the restaurants to fail – it’s the total lack of inspiration on the part of the tenants.

Latest case in point – Cole’s Burger Company.

Patsy’s Pizza

Being new to the Syracuse area, I have yet to find a pizza place that really wows me for a decent price. At the start of the summer I received a coupon for a free large pizza for Patsy’s Pizza. I planned to redeem it only a few weeks after I received the coupon, but luckily I called first because they were closed for vacation for a week. Finally, I decided to check this place out (after calling first) and see if for lunch this free pizza would lead to future pizzas at this place.

First of all, getting there is a bit of a hassle coming from Syracuse as Erie Boulevard is currently closed off due to construction. They’re located between Geddes St. & W. Genesee St. I’m sure this has had a major impact on their business, since what should take 2 minutes takes at least 10 to go around.

The Silo

A friend of mine has retreated from the hectic pace of Manhattan to the more bucolic surroundings of Chenango county.  To celebrate his birthday, the wife and I went to visit at his place on a private lake (not as fancy as it sounds).  I’ve reviewed a number of places in the area, but this time we were looking for something a little more upscale.  We made a reservation for the Silo Restaurant, which is technically in Greene, but actually closer to the hamlet of Coventry.

There was a wedding going on there that day.  And no, I don’t mean just “wedding reception.”   We were offered an 8 PM spot in the upstairs dining area because the wedding party was using the larger downstairs area, and we jumped at it.  This time of year, the sun is already setting earlier, so we were treated to a sweeping view of the grounds and the surrounding area for less time than I would have liked.  Right outside, next to a small fountain, the chairs and pavilion for the wedding ceremony were still set up.  We’ve walked the grounds previously, but I never thought of having a ceremony there.  Apparently it’s a regular thing for them.

This place is PACKED most nights during good weather.  Why?  It’s an Irish-themed bar with outdoor patio service!  On Rt 57 (aka Oswego Rd) in Liverpool, across from the Kmart, this location has been several restaurants over the years.  I remember the first time I ate at a restaurant here, the waitresses were on skates.

But I digress. . .

While Meghan MacMurphy’s is primarily a bar, they also serve food.   I was heading back from visiting a client around 1:30 and thought I’d stop in for a bite.  A few small businesses share the main lot, but there were only a couple cars when I dropped by.  I don’t know how the other businesses are doing, but there was only one customer when I arrived, and he was at the bar tipping a few back.

My fiancé and I were out doing errands and decided to grab a meal nearby.  Although, it doesn’t stand out along the strip of stores on Erie Boulevard, I did notice Ruby Tuesday and wanted to try them out.  I had never been to this location before, and figured my experiences at the Oswego Ruby Tuesday from college weren’t that bad.  Now, I went in aware that this is a chain, and didn’t expect anything breathtaking.  I just wanted to have a nice, quick meal.

The experience began with the host seating me and my fiancé at a booth with wet seats.  It felt a little gross sitting down and smelled like cleanser, but at least it meant they clean the place I guess.

Heids of Liverpool

Heid’s hot dog stand has been an icon in Liverpool for decades.  You can find discussions and fan pages across the Internet from people who remember the various incarnations with fondness.  And yet. . . there are people who have never been.

Frankly, I don’t blame them.  It can be a real turn-off to drive past the place on a sweltering summer Saturday afternoon and see a line out the door.  Waiting for what – a hot dog?  Or seeing ads at the beginning of the year – in the dead of winter – to  c’mon in for the February 2-fer-1 special.  Who wants to freeze their tail off, brave the CNY Weather Gods – maybe slide into a ditch and get your car dinged?  All for a hot dog?  How good can they actually be?

I often find myself in Fulton around lunch time on weekdays. 481 has a large selection of fast food joints, but very few quality sit-down establishments. One place I treat myself to every couple weeks is Blue Moon Grill, in the Canal View Plaza on 2nd Street (481, in other words).

Blue Moon has a fairly large dining room, with a mix of booths and tables. They also have an “upstairs” (3 steps higher than the main room) bar area, with some additional seating at high tables, and at the bar itself.
